Yoshino gets bigger than I expected, 35-40 feet tall. Fast growth rate, has more flowers each year and after 4 or 5 years will have berri...Read Morees which might stain concrete but the birds gobble them up very fast. It is said that this tree is short lived.
Is very attractive to bees, my tree was covered in bees and it was a sight that made me very happy because I have been concerned about the bee populations and trying to add more bee attracting plants, and here is Yoshino right in front of me!
As it grew, I did remove lower branches so we would be able to walk under the tree when it got big, it is wonderful to have shade in the back yard. The soil is moist and acidic and the tree loves it there.
Maybe the pruning made it stronger, but I never took any off the top, it already suckers a little at the bottom so I keep the pruners handy and also arrange pots of Hosta under the tree to discourage this.
I read that the tree should be in a sheltered area because storms can cause the branches to break off, we have plenty of storms and not one branch has broken off so far, it is between two houses as you can see in my photo. Maybe that helps, and also pruning out the inner branches that might smack each other.

Prunus yedoensis 'Awanui' was selected from trees planted by Keith Adams, one of Taranaki's many world famous nurserymen. Keith is best known for his expeditions through the hot steamy jungles of Borneo in search of Tropical Vireya Rhododendrons. Prunus will grow in most average soils, but the addition of deeply worked compost will ensure healthy growth. Plant in areas that are reasonable wind protected as strong winds will strip the flowers. Give them the room they deserve so they can show off to their potential.
