This vining lily relative is now variably assigned to the families Philesiaceae or Smilacaceae, depending upon the authority. Its bell-shaped, waxy, creamy-white flowers repeat bloom throughout summer and autumn. It prefers its roots in shade with its top semi-shaded in cool, moist, well drained, acidic soil, that does not dry out too much. It is the National Flower of Chile. Hardy to light frosts, its expected growth in average NZ conditions is 3m x 1m within 5 to 10 years. RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit).
