I was taking some plant photos at Tyler Arboretum in southeast Pennsylvania in January of 2010 with my new Nikkon 3000 camera, and I came...Read More upon this nice cultivar of the Yellow American Holly, Ilex opaca xanthocarpa 'Mary Fleming.' It is not listed in Dr Michael Dirr's manual. The arboretum had a tag on the two trees present, labled by the name given. American Holly grows well in most places in southeast Pennsylvania in full sun or part-shade, even in open locations, and I have seen the species doing well in barely acid soils of pH 6.8 - 6.9. I see lots of wild American Hollies growing in the woods of central and southern parts of the Delmarva Peninsula in the acid, sandy soils down there.
