Whitespire was first considered a cultivar of the Japanese Asian White Birch (Betula platyphylla japonica). This white birch was selected...Read More at the Arboretum of the University of Wisconsin in Madison because it showed more Bronze Birch Borer resistance than most other white barked birches. Now it seems perhaps to be considered by many as a Gray Birch, Betula populifolia, native to southeast Canada and northeast USA. It has been sold a lot in the Chicago area since the late 1980's and I have planted 10 in the Chicago area and one here in southeast PA. Gray Birch is more resistant to borers than other white birches, but tends to be short-lived for a tree of about 30 to 50 years. I haven't seen this tree get the typical grayish tinted white bark of the mother species so far. The bases of the triangular leaves are wider and flat rather than rounded as in the regular Gray Birch. I think it is worth planting, making a fine specimen or group. It is good in USDA Zones 4 thru 7.
Planted three of these trees 2008 as 15 gallon. Had considerable leaf burn summer 2009. Irrigated by drip system.
