This means that the species is spread over a fairly wide geographical area and plants may look quite different which come from different parts of its habitat. Further work may, in time, divide these plants into separate species (if it is determined that the plants no longer interbreed) or recognizable variants may be given names at the rank of subspecies. Generally, in botany the use of the term species complex, indicates a group of plants considered to be in the process of responding to local environmental stress factors by undergoing evolutionary change. This species is found from Far North Queensland right up to Papua New Guinea, including various islands in between, so it is distributed in such a way as to encourage this kind of evolutionary diversity.
Plants may be "difficult" to keep for people living outside the tropical zone. They require low-nutrient, high humidity conditions, with bright light without direct sun, unless the air is VERY humid. They usually grow on the trunks of trees, but can be found growing out in the open on rocky outcrops in PNG.
