We grow them in pots in full sun in spring and early summer, then move them into a shady location when they start to flower, as they appreciate some coolness in high summer and we appreciate the happy color in the shade around our blue bird bath. In Oregon's Willamette Valley has wintered in the ground for decades, with temperatures as low as 12 degrees. In pots they need to be overwintered in a shed or basement. Divide in spring and pass along. Some of these heirlooms came to Oregon from Illinois in the early 1900s.
