It has splendid guard petals of deep violet-rose color, while a great bunch of narrow petals or staminodes in the center are light lilac-rose, which, while retaining the brightness of the guards, harmonizes in color with them. Some visitors to our garden have made a second trip of many miles just to be able to form a matured estimate on the landscape value of this striking variety. $5.00
Per the APS website:
HANA-NO-SATO - See CATHEDRAL . - Jap. - Violet Rose - M.
CATHEDRAL (Origin Unknown) - (HANA-NO-SATO) - Japanese - Deep Pink - Midseason. Height 30". Slight fragrance. Large, vivid dark rose-pink guard petals, with narrow, lighter edges; compact center of long, pale pink petaloids with pointed tips and yellow at the base; reddish stigmas; slightly fragrant. Free blooming; foliage dark green. This is generally admitted to be of the Jap type; there are no vestiges of anthers on the central petals which are rather petaloids than staminodes. This would make it anemone type, strickly speaking, but many other Japs have similar character so it is extremely difficult to be absolutely consistent in this matter. Midseason.
