The LD50 (lethal dose that will kill 50% of test animals) means a smoker would have to get through 1500lb/700kg of cannabis in 15 minutes. Most agree that this is plainly impossible.
Hi,
cultivated selections with a little or no THC are legal in Switzerland.
There are often fields of "commercial" (nearly)...Read MoreTHC-free hemp in Switzerland, to harvest fibers and edible seeds.
In the 90ies every plant here was legal... that changed after a while of "wanting to legalize it as a drug".
Every female plant has totally dope free edible seeds and birds love it as autumn and winter diet. Also good as a fast growing hedge if legal in your area.
The annual plants thrive best in full sun and rich soil and can easily grow over 10 feet tall in one season. There are male and female plants.
In Switzerland 25% of the people got smoking experiences with it, that is a fact of the newspapers in the 90ies. And there are much more unhealthy consequences with legal drugs like alcohol, tabacco or coffee.
To cultivate it as a drug, there are much hybrids and cultivated forms of real sativa and indica. I heard rudelaris has no photoperiodic reactions, so it should be a interesting input for new hybrids grown outdoors.
Plants are frosthardy to 30/29°F (in the spring or fall) but seeds will survive winters with hard frost like -10 to -20°F or less.
This plant is illegal to grow in the USA because Dupont wants to make billions of $$$ synthesizing all of the things that used to be made...Read More from hemp; like nylon rope, wood-based acid paper, and synthetic oils. The truth is that Hemp and Marijuana are exactly the same plant - cannabis. There are three species of cannabis known to exist, and one other alleged to exist. They are Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis; all of which are annual varieties. The one alleged to exist grows in the Amazon and is a perennial rhizome vine called "creeper".
The only difference between hemp and the "drug" marijuana is in the method by which it is grown.
If you want to grow something to smoke (for medicinal purposes of course) then you have to eliminate the male plants. Only the female plants make THC, the most active ingredient in cannabis; and CBD, the second most active ingredient. If the female plants are allowed to be fertilized by the male pollen, then the plant will use up 98% of the THC and CBD in the seed-making process. Which is why people look at the marijuana before they buy it to make sure there aren't many seeds in it. One slang term for high-quality bud is "Sensimillia" which is a Spanish word that means "No Seeds"
If you want Hemp to make rope, or soap, or paper, or seeds for food or oil, or any of about 100 other products that can be made from hemp, then you would plant the seeds in a field with a spacing of about 24" on rows that are 24" apart. You would end up with about 50% male plants and 50% female. Being planted so densely, the male pollen would more than completely pollinate all of the females thus making the buds not worth smoking. If you smoked a pound of it you would get no more than a headache.
The "war on pot" is quite ironic. If it was still legal for farmers to grow hemp, then male cannabis pollen would permeate the atmosphere for miles in every direction around the hemp fields; making it almost impossible for anyone to grow marijuana with high THC content. But, that is not the reason it is illegal...alcohol is legal and is much more dangerous and addictive. As is the case with tobacco.
There are three types of cannabis known to exist...
Sativa, tend to be tall and thin. Have a higher THC content, but make much less weight of buds. They make longer hemp fibers, so it is preferred for hemp rope manufacture.
Indica, are shorter bushy plants. Have a lower THC content, but make three to ten times as heavy buds. The high number and size of the buds makes it more popular for hemp farmers who are farming for seeds/oil.
Ruderalis, a variety that grows above the Arctic circle and is time sensitive as opposed to daylight sensitive like the Sativa and Indica. This variety has low THC content, and is small and compact and not viable for farming as long as Sativa and Indica exist.
And one not proven to exist...
Creeper, a legendary type that has not been proven to exist. Allegedly it grows along the ground in tropical rain forests like a nut-grass. It is not an annual, but continues to live indefinitely as long as the climate is suitable. Since it puts down new roots where it touches the ground, it is similar to hops. This is not entirely implausible because cannabis and hops are first cousins botanically speaking and contain some very similar chemicals. It is said that creeper contains more THC than any other variety, probably because it does not make seeds...being rhizomic, and because it is making THC all year long instead of just two months near the end of the growth cycle.
One final note. There is a variety of Russian hemp that has been developed and genetically modified to remove the gene that creates THC. This is 100% free of THC and was developed for countries like ours where it is illegal to farm hemp because of a technicality. So, there is no reason why it should not be grown in the USA. Maybe we will finally find out why pot is illegal...thanks a lot Dupont.

As an emergency veterinarian, this is one of the most common plant poisonings I see in dogs. Fortunately most survive the experience, but they sure do not seem to enjoy it. Dogs find all forms of Marijuana edible, so those that have it must be sure to keep ALL of it from their pets (most dogs get it from finding brownies are used parts in the trash). Large overdoses can be dangerous.
