Simply cut of the offset and plant in well drained potting mix and mist. The offset stem with wither away, but the leaf cluster ball will remain intact and send roots down from its base. Maybe it naturally spreads by offset rolling away from the main plant before rooting (like Jovibarba globifera – Rolling Hen and Chicks). In my project, rooting took about 2 months during summer in Sydney, which I guess would be similar to Coastal California. I get the impression the hairy covering slows moisture evaporation from the leaves, but creating a microclimate around them.

Can rot easily over winter.
