It has a handsome timber that is used for cabinet making.
The fruit is unusual having 2 distinct flavors. The fruit are glossy black, the size and shape of a slightly flattened plum, with a red flesh inside containing 3 to 5 seeds which are long and thin. The soft flesh tastes to me like a bland paw paw but it also contains fibers which, when chewed release a much more interesting flavor, which does have a hint of apple. I understand it makes excellent preserves but, to date haven't had enough fruit to experiment.
Fruit ripens in Melbourne in mid-Summer and seed planted immediately after cleaning germinated over a period of 2-6 weeks.
