This begins to bloom in early summer. Bloom may continue all summer in cool summer climates, but in the US southeast bloom stops in June. Benefits from a hard summer cutback if it starts looking unkempt---regrowth is fast if moisture is consistent.

Spreads slowly by rhizomes.

Armitage gives its hardiness range as 4-7 on the North American east coast. Needs afternoon shade in the southeast.

Self-sows, and hybridizes freely with several other common geranium species. This is one of the parents of G. x oxonianum.

Native to southern Europe and western Asia, and introduced to western gardens in 1812.
