I have bought two of these fine, robust yuccas at a nursery in Chincoteague, VA and brought them up to our house in PA. One was purchase...Read Mored in Aug, 2012, kept in my garage over winter (because we weren't able to move in to house until November) and planted in the spring of 2013 (March) and the other was purchased in late July and planted in August (after we came back from our annual vacation).
They both have sailed through the past winter, which was the coldest one we've had in the past 20 years, with little or no damage to their leaves. During said winter, the local nursery & garden center 2 miles up the road recorded a low temp of -15 degrees on their monitoring station, which is SUPPOSED to be 15 degrees lower than the plant can survive, according to most literature. In addition to that near-record low, temperatures dropped below 0 not once, but at least 2-3 times and one of the times STAYED in the single digits for over a week. Definitely good for zone 6b, based on that, especially since neither is placed in a particularly protected area.
One thing I want to add: One way to tell this variety from the base Yucca gloriosa variety is that the leaves are slightly, but noticibly wider (like about 1/4"-1/2" wider at the base) and the central stem is also thicker for similarly sized plants (about 4"-5" in diameter as oppose to about 3" in diameter for my Y. gloriosa 'Varigatea").
