I really like the flowers on the Mandevilla so I had to have another one for 2011. I got this one from the Suntory Collection- Secrets of...Read More Sun Parasol which has the smaller leaves and bushier type growth. I guess this one can be grown in a pot and does not need support compared to the original mandevillas. I got this plant from the local Home Depot for $10.98 and planted it outside in a nice large pot with some good soil and a trellis. I heard they do not like temps below 50degrees so it was a guessing game on getting it outside. The plant is climbing all over the trellis but not as aggresive as my giant crimson and will not latch on itself(I bought some of those baby hair claw hair clips to direct some of the shoots.) Right now it gets about 6hrs of sun in late afternoon till sunset(summer months it will get more)

UPDATE...........May 6th 2012
Yes...6hrs of sunlight was not enough to get blooms off this plant so later in the summer the plant had to be moved into full sunlight where I was a little more successful. Unfortunately it was pretty late in the season due to construction so it didn't get to its full potential
I did over winter this plant in my crawlspace green house. It was attacked by aphids and sprayed with no success in killing the aphids but either the aphids or the chemicals took a toll on the plant.
The plant dropped all its leaves about 1 1/2 months prior to being brought up in April 2012 to go outside.
The plant is sending up new shoots from the bottom under the soil line but the top remains barren.
The plant is currently still in the pot from 2011 and has been placed in full sun for this growing season

I have decided I am no longer going to attempt to over winter any of the Mandevilla plants. Some of them survive only to take much to long to start blooming or I lose them over the winter. This could be due to cutting them back in order to fit them into the well lit crawl space. This is to much work dragging these indoors in the fall when I can just purchase them again in the spring for a low price. This year I may try and take cuttings over the summer and see if I am successfull with those. Sadly this will not be one of those
