As the tree gets very old the center of the trunk (heartwood) decays and the tree seems as if it were growing on stilt roots;though the name manglier as the mangrove that grows by the seaside. The leaves are thick, coriaceous and elliptic. The young leaves are covered with brownish red hairs during the winter months. The wood seems to be very strong and rot-proof, it was very appreciated by carpenters in early times ; when this plant was in abundance and not yet a protected species.
