They thrive in areas with cool summer temperatures (60-70 degrees). The zone designations used to describe the hardiness of a plant are misleading because they describe the low temperatures for that area but not the high temperature reached during the summer. As a general rule, these plants do not survive hot summers.
Regarding sun or shade: In colder climates like Anchorage these plants will grow in full sun but need to be watered more frequently. They will grow in almost full shade. I have some plants in nearly full shade that are 15 years old but the plants don't get as large as those that get more sun.
