Seriously, the plant has much to commend it as far as accepting virtually any conditions of exposure, water availability, difficult soils, but be sure you are prepared to keep it in control or else use it for purposes such as covering the rusting auto bodies in a junk yard. I would keep it away from other plants and give it a lot of territory, plus cut it back regularly. Unmanaged the vine will pile up on itself to a thickness of several feet in a cushiony mass - hence the name Mattress Vine. The negative rating is simply to draw attention to the invasive qualities of the plant. Used properly, with awareness of its vigor and appropriate management, it can be beautiful.
