There is a full grown Japanese Maple out side the window where I work. It is one of the most beautiful trees I have ever seen. In the sp...Read Morering it is a light but brilliant green and darkens throughout the summer. By fall it has turned a soft red and holds its leaves until at least mid November. It is a wide umbrella shape and provides a large shaded area.
I dug up some small trees under the well established tree, being careful to not disturb the roots anymore then necessary. My first efforts did not do well. Later another employee there said he had planted some in a large pot and kept it in a fairly shady location outside and for the most part let Mother Nature do the watering unless we had an extended dry spell. I tried it and they are doing great. My little 4" trees are now about 3' and adding new branches, all in one summer. When they are about 6' I will transplant to a mostly sunny location as the mother tree is in full sun all day. Warning: I had to tell the man who cuts the grass not to disturb them as he thought they were "Pot"! The young trees sure do look alot like pot!
Anyone who can start them this way will save big bucks as they are very expensive to purchase. However, they are well worth the work of babying along young transplants or paying the price for a nursery plant as they are so beautiful.
