The tree is fast growing. I have the dwarf variety so it will obtain a height and width of about 10 feet in full maturity. I planted bare root stock and the tree will start producing small amounts of apples within 3 - 5 years. When I planted my tree it was about 3.5 - 4 feet tall and now it is over 6 feet tall in just one year. The trunk was about a half-inch in diameter when planted and now it is about an inch thick. The leaves are green and in the fall they turn a yellow to gold-yellow color. The flowers appear around zone 5 in April to May. They are a pinkish color. Harvest in Zone 5 is late September and all of October.
The only problem I've seen with my tree so far is bugs like to lay eggs on the underside of the leaves. Not sure what these eggs turn out to be but spraying with horticultural oil solves the problem. Japanese beetles like to eat the leaves, but Sevin or horticultural oil seem to take care of that problem, too.
Deer like to eat the leaves and branches. Protect the tree in the fall/winter in order to prevent deer from breaking the branches and trees by walking through, trying to reach high limbs, or bucks rubbing antlers on the tree.
