Winterhazels have a graceful natural architecture, with regularly zig-zagging silver branches spreading in parallel. Pruning spoils this natural structure. These shrubs are best planted where they can reach their mature size without interference.
Buttercup winterhazel is the smallest and daintiest of the winterhazels, reaching 6' high and spreading to 8' wide. The branches are slender and fine-textured, much more so than those of the other members of the genus, and the mature size is half that of any other.
