Some sources list it as a cultivar of the Sweet Joe-Pye-Weed, Eutrochium purpureum, but that species has green glaucous stems with purple nodes (joints) and 3 to 4 leaves in a whorl. Still, the several species of eastern North America are not very different one from the other. Good pollinator plant and easy to grow like the straight species.
