The thorns seemed to be worse when t...Read Morehe tree was younger and are not at all an issue after 6 or 7 years...that is unless you want to climb it. The thorns are still there - just not as many. Not a shallow rooted tree so you can underplant it. My Hawthorn does not have a lot of berries at the moment but it also is battling a little rust issue. I am going to spray it this week and I expect to see more berries next year or the year after. It's been a nice addition to our back yard and overall I am very happy with this tree.
