Some consider it as a separate...Read More species and others as a variety of the Silky Dogwood of Cornus ammomum. In other words, Cornus ammomum obliqua. I favor the latter, as there is so little difference. This variety has slightly smaller leaves that are narrower of 2 to 4" long x 1/2 to 1.25 inches wide while the regular Silky Dogwood has leaves 2 to 5" x 3/4 to 2.5 inches wide. The hairs under the leaves and on twigs are not rusty like the regular Silky Dogwood. Otherwise, these shrubs get about 6 to 12 feet high, bear flattish white flower clusters in late spring, bear fruit that goes from green to white to blue, and both get purplish-red fall color whether dull or brighter.
