Likes a light, sandy, consistently moist alkaline soil that must be in full sun (which is for the better, since maintaining a topping of sharp sand around its base will deter slugs).
This plant seemed to me, with its pretty bell flowers and edible qualities, that it would be an excellent candidate for a permaculture-type of garden on a small scale, if you are lucky enough to live somewhere where the law protects people from pesticides from road maintenance crews, aerial spraying and neighbors.
