It is a tuberous plant that goes dormant in summmer heat. Growth may start in the fall or it may wait till mid-winter. Winter growth is always welcome and freezing temperatures do not bother it. The pink flowered variety 'Sweetheart' has been one of my early blooming perennials, some years by late March, that adds a lot of color. I have had great success growing it in pots though I have had to repot it every 2 years to maintain vigor and flowering. In the garden Sweetheart tends to spread out and form very open patches.
