It is very similar to ...Read Morethe Eastern Hophornbeam of eastern North America and to the European Hophornbeam. One has to count the pairs of leaf veins on the leaves to tell them apart. This Japanese species has 9 to 12 vein pairs while the Eastern American species has 12 to 15 vein pairs while the European has 15 to 20. A western or Knowlton Hophornbean of the southwestern US has smaller leaves and 5 to 8 vein pairs.
