I first planted this tree the fall of 2006. The winter was erratic and the temperatures got real cold for a short period of time and was...Read More followed by an extended warm period. Then the first week of April 2007 we had a terrible freeze. The tree was just ready to open its flower buds and all the leaves except for 2 and a small cluster buds froze off and died. Luckily the tree resprouted but did not flower that year. Also a few of the branches had about a 6" die-back from the tips. Although I scratch them and they are still green to this day. So i left them. The tree also sprouted vigorous shoots from the base of the tree. I left them alone b/c I wanted the roots to get strong. I didn't hold this against the tree b/c even my large southern red oak lost all its leaves in that spring freeze. I will see what it does this year...barring any disastrous freeze!!!
btw the cluster of blooms that did open were gorgeous!
