At first they almost look like flower buds but slowly grow tubercules with papery spines just like the main plant. Not all the buds make it, so in time it must become very assymetrical. I've never seen a mature specimen.
I'm assuming they are difficult to grow on their own roots as this one is grafted. It's also very slow growing.
