Passiflora, Passion Flower, Passion Vine 'Sunburst'

Instead of cutting it back and putting it out on the deck this summer, I placed it by a long wall of south facing windows I strung twine across the top of. The plant shot out new growth quickly and has crept across the twine along the window tops about 15 feet. Talk about an eager creeper. Yes, the weird smell is very real but not constant. When the smell its exuding, it's intense, and to my nose like moth balls with a lot more pungentness. That said, I'm in love with its incredible leaves, its tiny, amazing blossoms and the very dear and teensty little passion fruits it makes after a flush of flowering. This plant is very cool and so worth growing.

Gorgeous plant and bloom, but was difficult here. Would grow great then decline, the repeat the process. Never could get a cutting of it ...Read Moreto really take off either and normally Passi's root very easily for me. Finally it just died...I'll not be replacing it.

The person that said that it smells like turpentine? I have an issue with that description. It does NOT smell like turpentine. It smel...Read Morels WORSE than turpentine. LOL.

I don't want to post a negative rating for a beautiful plant such as this - really it is a beauty. Nice foilage, BEAUTIFUL and weird flowers, a good grower, delicate. But the scent does not make this an appropriate plant for most home gardens. Maybe against that one fence where the neighbour is being a butthead, but other than that I see very little draw for a home gardener. Not that that stops ME from planting it but I am not a reasonable person by any stretch of the imagination.

Seriously, kids, this is best as a collectors plant because most people would have a serious issue with the odour. I, myself, am a BIG fan of the Stapelia genus. I LOVE the plants and tolerate the odour. But this Passiflora? I put it on the side of the house out of sight - the smell is terrible and carries so it is hard to appreciate it as a cultivated plant in a home garden. BEAUTIFUL as it is...
