It forms a slowly spreading clump 15-20" tall and wide. Compared to the closely related G. pratense, this species is lower growing, with leaves much more deeply cut, with more basal leaves, and with a more open inflorescence.
Cutting back the flowering stems as soon as flowering is over is said to encourage repeat bloom.
According to Allen Armitage, this is hardy from Z5 to Z7 in eastern North America. It is intolerant of the hot humid summers of the US southeast.
Intolerant of drought, it isn't particular about soil, as long as it's well drained and receives consistent moisture.
The foliage is not aromatic.
