It spreads by underground stems like most temperate bamboo species. It was especially conspicuous around the large amount of Loblolly Pine trees, often in draining wet areas. This natural variety of "tecta" gets to about 6 feet high, while the "gigantea" variety gets much taller. Native to coastal MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, and along the Gulf of Mexico into east TX and OK.
