It can usually be found growing in limestone soils in pine forests. Viguiera cordifolia differs from the similar Viguiera dentata in having shorter (< 9 mm) petioles and phyllaries that gradually narrow instead of abruptly narrowing to spreading, herbaceous tips. In addition, Viguiera cordifolia is distinguished from similar other species by its straight stems which are very woody and which are held stiffly erect.
