It may grow erectl...Read Morey (to up to 90 cm) or have a sprawlng habit and is sometimes woody at its base.. The 5.5 cm long and .9 cm wide leaf blades are lanceolate o linear with toothed margins. Originating in the leaf axils or terminal, the blooms which have 1.5 cm long petals are solitary or clustered. The bloom's long pedicels project the bloom beyond the subtending leaves. Showy Fantails is similar to S. spinosa; however, it lacks the blunt spine next to the base of the petiole which is characteristic of S. spinosa. It thrives in brushy and woodland areas in sandy and gravelly soils in the Rio Grande Plains and Coastal Prairie Regions of Texas. It is a very robust and glabrous perennial.which is an excellent source for adult nectar for the Laviana White-Skipper and the Common Checkered-Skipper. Cattle and white-tailed deer eat its foliage.
