It usually has purplish colored stems and no leaf petioles (leaf stems). It sometimes has some radiate florets (blooms with rays; look like daisies) present among the discoid (disk) florets (lacking ray flowers and having only tubular florets) in the flower clusters. It also can have all disk florets or all ray florets. It blooms in the summer and the fall.
