It can be found close to saline or gypseous water sources such as, springs, marshes, creeks, rivers, irrigation canals and roadside ditches. Clasping yellowtops has perfoliate leaves which means that they are pierced by the stem or the basal part is united around the stem. Clasping yellowtops, succulent habit, large, clusters of discoid heads and usually 2–4 pappus scales distinguish it from other species of Flaveria. It is not thought to be closely related to any of the other species.
