Have seen plants blooming from May through July only. The blooms are a lovely bright yellow with a red center - sort of resembles a prickly pear blossom. The seed pods are big for such a small plant. Found out is has a huge underground tuber. Resembles a long potato!!! Guess it would need a root system like that to survive the harsh Texas weather and drought.
Have found several of these growing in just one area of the ranch. Have them staked out with flags now and will harvest seeds. Have noticed the leaves fall off and the stem dries out - the plant seems to go dormant after it blooms - by the fall season there are not visible above ground signs of it. They'll start putting out new growth in the Spring.
Am assuming it would last longer and grow bigger if it were fertilized and watered regularly but since I've left them in the ground they have to make do with whatever rain and temperatures Mother Nature deems.
