In my book (National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-Eastern Region-) it says: "Habitat, Moist woods, thickets". It is not noticeably moist in our woods though so I would not worry about moisture too much.
If I were to grow it in my garden, it would be for the unusual seed formation.
