I may be wrong but I believe in nature it grows in Rocky places in pockets of well draining gritty mineral soil. You may even add dolomite or broken concrete chips. I am planting it in my rock/ cactus garden here in California, but under the filtered shade of an oak. I think our full calif. sun would stress it, as it sunburns even the cactus.
Rarely available unique xerophytic fern similar to some of our calif natives like birds foot fern. I found out that like some native calif sun/rock ferns ( birds foot, gold back) wavy cloak fern can go bone dry when established , in summer. It will dry up and look totally brown and dead, only to be revived after a watering or the start of the winter rains.
