In the Sacramento area low foothills, gets by with little or no water (but accepts some from a drip emitter and looks better in peak summer with a bit) in shallow soil over rock as long as it gets some sun. Have some E. canum spp. under pine and oak in another area that is quite invasive via underground runners, but 'Catalina' is well behaved. The grayish leaves provide a nice eye-catching contrast to darker-green plants around it and the brilliant late summer-fall flowers are a plus when everything else is going heat/drought-dormant. Hummingbirds will fight wars over this plant.
Hummingbirds LOVE it! Easy to grow with no water. BUT rhizomes are very invasive, spreads aggressively with no extra water.
