I have planted a number of disease resistant apple trees in my yard. (This group needs less if any spr...Read Moreaying for fungal disorders but is still susceptible to insect pests as is any other apple). Do a search for "Disease resistant apple varieties" if interested. Don't want to spray - just cut the areas of bug damage off before serving slices. Rest of apple looks great.

Of them all Enterprise is my favorite based on quality and truly resisting disease without spraying in my hands. It hangs well without dropping. Can be picked here anywhere in range of Late September to mid October with good quality
It is vigorous even on semi-dwarf without fertilizer besides that given the lawn it grows in. No signs of leaf disease, scab, mildew or cedar apple rust without sprays for fungus(performs as advertised as very disease resistant).

Nice dark red finish. It is large, crisp, fairly sweet and very rich in flavor - Fuji-like. Good for fresh eating or cooking.

For pest control an organic type of clay ("Surround") sprayed on it in spring protects fairly well against insects. Plastic sticky Red apple spheres didn't seem to help. Primary pests I think are plum curculio and codling moths. I am going to try bagging and coddling moth traps.

Other disease resistant apples I have tried are
-Red Free - very early, very sweet with little acid, short shelf life, good disease resistance. Beautiful bright red finish. Size fairly large. A keeper
-Williams Pride. Flavor rich and spicy. A little pit of greenish sooty splotching of fruit without spray. Foliage looks healthy without antifungal spray. Good size. A keeper
-Goldrush: yellow with rich flavor but very susceptible to cedar apple rust (though there are cedars planted nearby so pressure is high). Also black spots ruin fruit finish without antifungal spray. medium size. Ended up pulling it out
-Macfree - rock hard and tasteless - the worst I tried. It is gone too.
-others too young to comment

Purchased in 1999 from Stark Bros. Nursery. The tree is over 12 foot tall and still growing. For a semi-dwarf, it puts on over a foot of ...Read Moregrowth a year. The foliage is very clean, no signs of disease. Blooms later, and fruit set is sparse. Will update if and when I can protect an apple from the furry tailed rats around here long enough to ripen, instead of finding half-grown, half-eaten fruits laying around.
