It grows in very limey soils and is very tolerant of high pH. The red form, Aesculus pavia var. pavia, is common to the east of San Antonio. The yellow form, Aesculus pavia var. flavescens, is the common form from San Antonio north and westward. In areas of San Antonio the two forms meet and create a multitude of colors including peach, pink, salmon and other intergrades between the yellow and red forms.
