The "clavata" variety has from 11 to 13 thick radial spines per areole and slender stems.
The "nigrihorrida" variety has dark colored radial spines and globose stems most of the time.
The "vallenarensis" variety has from 9 to 24 thin & straight radial spine per areole and slender stems.
The "wagenknechtii" variety has smaller flowers than the other varieties at about 1.2 inches wide.
All varieties are very prone to root rot and grow solitary stems except the "castanea" variety.
