-- "crispa subsp. crispa" has twisted, black & twisted spines that are not easily distinguished as a centrals or radial spines.
-- "crispa subsp. atroviridis var. atroviridis" has needle-like & thick spines. Twelve to fourteen radial spines.
-- "crispa subsp. atroviridis var. carrizalensis" has thick needle-like spines. It has 15 ribs and 10 to 13 radial spines per areole.
-- "crispa subsp. atroviridis var. huascensis" only has 6 to 8 radial spines. All the spines are needle-like and stiff. It has from 10 to 12 ribs.
-- "crispa subsp. atroviridis var. totoralensis" has very few ribs and twisted spines.
