I cultivate it in my garden where it has been relatively tolerant of occasional dry spells, and it also grows wild near the waterside in consistently moister soil. I like to scatter the seeds once they've dried to promote self-sowing.

The plants can get quite tall, over 6 feet in some instances and the flower plumes are popular with bees and butterflies.
