The front view. They nest in holes in sandy, sunny places, often in lawns making a small volcano-like mound.

Taken on 12th April 2008, Lincoln UK. A male on Pieris 'Forest Flame'. Similar to other males, but the white facial hairs and small tooth-like projection on the bottom of the mandible separate it.

It looks like it is 'robbing' nectar from the back of the flower.

A female on 17th April 2008, feeding and so pollinating Victoria Plum flowers which they visited frequently.

They are much smaller than appears, I found one on my path which had been parasitized with an egg stuck in the under side of the abdomen, it was tiny but of course was nearly dead.

The female is black underneath and has an entirely black face with black facial hairs.
