Yellow, almost chartreuse color, fuzzy externally with red stripe up side. Defensively curled up in a ball.

Mid instar IO larvae eating gregariously on a Redbud leaf. In later instars they become solitary. Pic taken 8-23-03.

Io caterpillars being kept in a safe aquarium. These are shown with branches of Hibiscus where they were found.
