Taken 27th August 2006 in my garden. They are usually found sunning on leaves in hedgerows or woodland, or running about.

They are similar to Syritta pipiens which has a red spot on the more swollen hind leg segment.

The face, it looks to have it's tongue hanging out, they feed on honey-dew secreted by aphids. All eyes, in flies the eyes of males are close together.

Taken on 16th July 2007, Lincoln UK. This is the female, it was licking the sticky excretions from black aphids.
