The male M. scalare can be identified by the green halters, the little balancing flaps behind the wings.

Taken on 2nd May 2008, Lincoln UK. This is a female on a small Aquilegia 'Ballerina' opening bud.

On 18th July, a female on an Agapanthus flower. You can see triangular marks on the frons, above the antennae which nearly meet in the middle called 'dust spots'. M. mellinum has very small 'spots'

On 2nd October 2008, a female resting on an Ivy leaf. The lovely green halter can be seenn.
