Taken on 19th June in my garden, on a Hydrangea. This is fairly large, the 'venal loop' can be seen on the wing which is characteristic of Eristalis.

The female is variable, sometimes it has no orange marks at all.

The female has separated eyes. E. tenax has a broad, prominent dark stripe down the centre of the face.

E. tenax has a near cylindrical abdomen resembling a drone. The tibiae of the hind legs are dark in E. tenax, whereas they are distinctly bicoloured in E. pertinax.

On 13th September, a male cleaning itself. This shows the dark hind legs which E. tenax have. It appears to be missing part of the middle leg!
