This is a female Tree weta - NOT a 'him' as in my photo comment..

Tree weta - found in gardens and bush - communicate by stridulation. When the pegs on their hind legs are scraped over comb-like ridges on the side of their body, it produces a chirping sound that they hear through ears on the sides of their front legs.
