This beetle is native to south and central europe, including southern and particularly south eastern parts of the UK. The adults feed on tree sap oozing from bark and the larvae eat rotting wood, usually underground. The adult males usually roost during the day and fly at dusk in search of females. I have seen them being taken on the wing by serotine and noctule bats in the UK (despite their large size!).
